(¿19 dic.? 1753, cond. de Caroline, Va.–21 ago. 1824, cond. de Caroline, Va., EE.UU.).

Político estadounidense. Prestó servicios en el Ejército continental (1775–79) y en la milicia de Virginia (1781), durante la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos de América. Partidario firme de los derechos de los estados, se opuso a la ratificación de la constitución de EE.UU. Perteneció al Senado (1792–94, 1803, 1822–24) y presentó las resoluciones de Virginia y Kentucky ante el poder legislativo de Virginia (1798). Partidario de Thomas Jefferson, escribió ensayos acerca de la importancia de mantener una democracia agraria como una defensa frente al desarrollo de un gobierno central excesivamente poderoso.
